The visual style employed by the film is both very effective and engaging and may well have been a significant influence on other filmmakers of the time. This viewer has seen nothing similar to it for that era. This also is a very effective device that adds impact to the film, and successfully heightens the experience. Especially compared to if the entire film were in standard black and white.

There is a significant amount of exposition present in the inter-title cards which had to be translated from French back into English. This may be because much of Gillette's play had to be scaled back for the film adaptation. What of Gillette? His was the first performance that anyone ever saw of Sherlock Holmes. In general appearance he does seem to be cut almost directly out Sidney Pagent's original drawings for Holmes. At the time of filming he had been playing Holmes for decades and he does portray a rich and nuanced Holmes on screen.

His characterization is both powerful and playful at times, displaying a wry sense of humor. While comparisons will be made to every other actor who has been Holmes on screen particularly Basil Rathbone, his closest contemporary his physical movement did remind this viewer a great deal of Jeremy Brett.

His was a strong and sturdy Holmes and not a thin rail of a man. Other classic characters are, of course, present. Watson is used minimally, and not surprisingly, often for comic effect. However, it is done with care and he is an intelligent and believable character in the story. The script was a pastiche of several Holmes stories and Gillette had Doyle's full permission to take liberties with the cannon, and he does. Audiences should keep this in mind, and note that during filming Sherlock Holmes was not the century-old icon that he is today.

Overall, the film is still enjoyable and engaging even for contemporary audiences. Gillette's Sherlock Holmes has aged well, and happily can be enjoyed again by new generations of fans.

Called by Blackie Lawless the pair untied to form W. The band not only had a classic heavy metal sound they had a dynamic stage presence as well with the over the top antics of Lawless and the showmanship of Holmes. Their popularity only increased when they became notorious for songs that included profanities and album covers that featured things like a codpiece with a buzz saw blade coming out of it.

Watching the movie you realize that this is going to be one side of the story. Even so while observing Holmes and hearing people who knew him and were part of the band back then you get the impression that this side is factual on all levels. As their popularity grew Lawless wanted the focus to be on him and none of the other band members. While the rest were happy to talk to fans and sign autographs, Lawless made himself unavailable and then chastised Holmes for catering to the fans.

Towards the end Lawless did his best to cut Holmes out of everything. But Lawless didn't approve and was angered by it. The buildup and frustrations felt by Holmes led to his departing the band. What he learned the hard way was that he'd signed over all the publishing rights to all of his songs. To this day he doesn't get a penny for any of them.

Now rather than just assume this is someone with a grudge the director brings in more people to back up the claim. Other band members. A roadie who worked and toured with the band. Other bands that saw firsthand what was going on.

It doesn't paint a pretty picture. Holmes went on to other bands but none of them shone as brightly as W. Eventually he became an alcoholic until a reunion of the band set him straight. That was short lived as old habits of credit where it wasn't due kicked in once more. He worked construction and other jobs but eventually found his love of performing return.

Now he's back. The majority of the film focuses on a tour Holmes and his band Mean Man took in Europe. No nay-sayer is going to win an argument by pointing out the outlandish non-sensical action scenes. We already know and it's why we watch the movies. It is what it is at this point. This time it's personal for Dom Toretto Vin Diesel.

Dom blames Jakob for the death of their father who died in a racing accident. Jakob went into the spy game. He is now trying to obtain a gadget split into two halves the key to activate it. F9 is simply a ludicrous high octane action movie. Most of the stunts defy gravity. There is a segment set in space. The story makes little sense with another character coming back from the dead. Even the younger versions of Dom and Jakob look nothing like their older counterparts.

At least as a popcorn film it is magnetic fun. The crew once again comes together and saves the world. They had to create a past and make John Cena the brother of Vin Diesel and the bad guy. Jordana Brewster is back and Helen Mirren in a cameo. No Jason Stratham, but we do get Charlize Theron as the bad girl.

The plot is immaterial. There is more car wreckage than what Bruce Willis did to Moscow. There is a scene which pokes fun at the FF series by discussing the infinite impossible missions that they go on and they don't die, or even get a scratch. And of course all ends well with the extended family meal.

I learned you can drive through a mine field but you must be going 80 MPH or more.
